Greetings!

We wanted to share this information regarding the incident that occurred last Wednesday.

Lock Down Follow Up
On Wednesday morning 9/9, there was police action in the area of the school. Initial reports indicated that the suspect was running away from the school and that we were not in danger. Out of an abundance of caution, we locked down the school ensuring that all students and staff were inside of locked rooms. We were in contact with our school resource officer, the local game warden, the TTUSD district office keeping us apprised of the situation. After about 15 minutes, we received the "all clear" call from law enforcement saying that the suspect was in custody. All parents were notified immediately by way of a Smart Alert on Parent Square.

During this situation we used our Centegix emergency button. Every staff member wears a badge with a button for situations like this one. It is the way that anyone on staff can alert administration or 911 directly in case of emergency. Because of these, we were already in lockdown when we got word from law enforcement about their suggestion to lock down the school.
Students did a fantastic job of staying calm and following the directions of adults. This is what we ask of them in any emergency situation. Teachers did a great job of staying alert and keeping students calm.

Here is the report from Truckee PD about the incident: 

Around 9 AM, Truckee Police officers attempted to take a wanted subject into custody in the area of Highway 89 South and Donner Pass Road. The individual fled from officers on foot when contacted, prompting a heavy law enforcement response to the area. Because of the relative proximity near TTUSD facilities, the School District was notified and was asked to temporarily lock down its main office and the SELS Charter School out of an abundance of caution. The subject was apprehended shortly thereafter, and at no time was there any active threat to the school district, or any students in attendance. Our department greatly appreciated the cooperation and strong working relationship with TTUSD while officers worked to safely resolve the incident.
 

📆 Our Schedule This Week

Monday: Picture Day! Be sure to be at school on time & bring in your form to give to the photographer. SELS Board Meeting ~ 5:30pm in Conference Room A at the District Office.
Tuesday: Community Crew ~ 9:15 am. 
Wednesday: Minimum Day ~ Middle school release 11:45 am; Elementary school release 1:00 pm. PTC Meeting ~ 5:30pm at Tahoe Donner Lodge. All are welcome! Come meet the crew, hear what's planned for the year, and share your ideas.

First Annual Brush Your Fangs 2026 Poster Contest🎃🪥🦷

The Placer County Oral Health Program is inviting Kindergarten through 6th grade students throughout Placer County to get creative and show us how they keep their smiles healthy this Halloween.

Students can create an original poster featuring “Brush Your Fangs” or another positive oral health message.

Contest Details
  • Open to: K–6th grade students
  • Submission Deadline: September 25, 2026
  • Students may submit one poster entry
  • Posters must be original student artwork and follow the contest requirements
  • A completed and signed Contest Entry Form must accompany each poster submission

Three Ways to Submit
Completed posters and entry forms can be submitted by:
Email: Scan or take a clear photo of the completed poster and entry form and email them to cwilliams@placer.ca.gov

Drop-Off: Completed posters and entry forms can also be dropped off at our Health and Human Services Building at 11434 B Avenue, Auburn, CA 95603

💡 Reminders

Chaperones/Volunteers
If you plan to volunteer or chaperone please be sure to fill out all appropriate forms as soon as possible! *New forms are required each year.*

Additional Reminders:

  • ALL SELS visitors, classroom volunteers, chaperones and fieldwork drivers MUST check in at the office to receive a badge. You need to bring your driver’s license with you. Feel free to ask anyone in the office if you need assistance with this process.
  • Reminder: If your child will be absent from school, we must be informed by 10:00am on the date of absence. We also need to know the reason for the absence. Thank you!
  • Elementary morning drop-off begins at 8:55 am (if your child is not in Morning Program); please do not have students here before then as we have no campus supervision.
  • Any time you are waiting in the pick-up area for students, please turn your car off. DO NOT LET YOUR CAR IDLE FOR LONG PERIODS. We are trying to keep students and staff healthy and car exhaust fumes are not safe.
  • When walking onto campus, make sure you park in the parking lot; do not leave cars unattended in the driving lanes during drop-off and pick-up times.
  • All SELS visitors, classroom volunteers, chaperones and drivers on fieldwork MUST check in at the office to receive a badge. You need to bring your driver’s license with you. Feel free to ask anyone in the office if you need assistance with this process.
  • Lots of fieldwork coming up! Please be sure your student is prepared: dressed appropriately for the weather, proper footwear, sunscreen, snacks and/or lunch packed.
