Dear TTUSD Families and Community,
Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year! There’s an unmistakable magic to these first few weeks: lively stories swapped in the hallways, the sparking of fresh curiosities and the incredible energy of a brand-new beginning.
Over the summer, our Board created a renewed vision for our district:
Working together, we cultivate a foundation of excellence as we engage, challenge, and prepare all students—from our littlest learners to our high school scholars.
To bring this vision to life, we’re kicking off a Strategic Plan Refresh Taskforce to ensure a wide range of voices guide our path forward. Information on applying to join was sent a few weeks ago and is also detailed below. Hearing your thoughts at the recent Truckee Block Party was a great start, and I’m excited to keep gathering community wisdom as we dive into this work.
Alongside our strategic planning efforts, we are also ensuring our current policies keep pace with modern innovations. Last spring, we wrapped up an important project. On June 10th, our TTUSD Trustees adopted our first Artificial Intelligence Board Policy. It sets high-level guidelines for navigating new educational technologies thoughtfully and safely. Next steps include bringing together our education experts to determine what AI tools may be right for TTUSD. At this time, no AI chatbots are available for student use on TTUSD devices or network. We do realize many of our students are trying AI while working on homework and projects. Please join us on October 8th at 6:00 p.m. in the Truckee High School Theater for a presentation where we will discuss this central question: How do we keep human minds in the loop and students in the driver’s seat of their education?

As we settle into the new school year, we want to share a heartfelt thank you to our community. Thanks to your support of the Measure AA parcel tax, our students arrive on day one with fully stocked classrooms. Skipping the long back-to-school shopping list is a unique advantage made possible by our community’s generosity.
For 37 years, local parcel tax funding has helped our schools thrive by directly investing in the people who care for our students. Measure AA funds 40 full-time positions across our district—bringing passionate art, music, STEM, and PE teachers into our classrooms, alongside dedicated counselors to support student well-being. It also powers modern classroom technology, AP courses, and hands-on Career & Technical Education (CTE), with 100% of every dollar staying right here in Tahoe Truckee.
Looking ahead, current Measure AA funding expires at the end of the 2027–2028 school year. On the November 3, 2026 ballot, local voters will consider Measure P, a proposed renewal to continue local funding for key teachers, manageable class sizes, STEM, and career training.

One of the most powerful ways to set your child up for success this year is simple: make daily attendance a top priority.
September is Attendance Awareness Month, making it the ideal time to reflect on the importance of attending school every day. Students who attend school regularly build stronger reading skills, develop lasting friendships, and are better prepared for future success.
We understand challenges like illness, transportation, and morning routines can make attendance difficult. Our school teams are here to help! If you're facing barriers, please don't hesitate to reach out to your school for resources and support.

Starting a new school year brings a mix of excitement and nerves. To help our newest students settle in, student leaders have already jumped into action to make sure everyone feels connected from day one.
Through Where Everyone Belongs (WEB) in middle school and Link Crew in high school, trained 8th graders, juniors, and seniors stepped up to mentor incoming 6th and 9th graders. These student leaders do far more than just help on orientation day. Over the coming months, they’ll host a variety of activities, lead advisory lessons, and serve as friendly guides to help younger peers build confidence and navigate their new schools.
These connections endure long past the first few weeks. A simple meeting in a peer mentor group often sparks a lasting friendship—or inspires students to become mentors when their turn comes. As the school year unfolds, our student leaders are showing what happens when we lead with kindness and empathy to build a community where everyone belongs.

While we do everything we can to keep students safe, we know unexpected bumps, scrapes, and injuries can still happen on campus. Since personal medical costs from injuries that occur at school are not covered by the district, we partner with Myers-Stevens & Toohey to provide families with access to optional student insurance plans.

TTUSD staff kicked off the new school year at our district-wide gathering, celebrating our remarkable team and building momentum for an incredible 2026–2027 school year.
We were joined by our incredible community partners, the Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation, as they celebrate 40 years of unwavering support. Through four decades of dedicated funding, innovation, and classroom enrichment, the Foundation continues to empower our educators.

Last year, volunteers helped the Shane McConkey Foundation turn over 2,700 pounds of plastic caps—otherwise destined for the landfill—into benches and garden beds for our community. Now, it's your turn to be a part of this incredible recycling initiative.
Join them for the fifth annual Don't Drop the Top Community Sort Day. You'll help sort the plastic caps and lids that are the building blocks for benches and more. It’s a fun, family-friendly event, and a great way for high school students to earn community service hours. Food, drinks, and prizes will be provided!
